Hello, I am Dr. Antonio Morales-Pita. After teaching for fifty-one years  in higher education institutions in Cuba, Mexico and the United States, I decided to retire from DePaul University where I was working since 1999. My last position was Invited Assistant Professor of International Political Economy at the International Studies Department from 2009 to 2016 and, simultaneously, as Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Economics in the period 1996 to 2016. I also worked as full time faculty and Assistant Academic Augustine College from 1996 to 2006. I was born in Cuba, arrived in the United States in 1996, and received my American citizenship in 2004. At DePaul University I was recipient of the QM Star (Excellence in online course design) in 2014, of the Media Star in 2008, and of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007. In 1995 I was granted the Cátedra Patrimonial de Excelencia Award by the Mexican Institute for Research in Higher Education at Merida’s Institute of Technology, as well as numerous awards for pedagogic and scientific achievements granted by the Cuban Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba, and the University of Havana in the period 1982 – 1990.
My education can be summarized as follows:


  • 2nd PhD in Economic Sciences (specialization: nation wide development planning in agric-industrial economics) at the Institute of Economics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kiev, Ukraine, 1990.
  • Ph.D in Economics (specialization: quantitative methods) at the same institution mentioned above, 1982.
  • Master in Science in Operations Research at Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland, 1971.
  • Bachelor of Science in Economics, with a major in mathematics applied to economics, at the University of Havana, Cuba, 1967.

  • At the Department of Economics I taught the following courses:  Introductory Macroeconomics, Introductory Microeconomics, Introduction to Money and Banking, and Managerial Economics. At the International Studies I taught the following courses: Sustainable Development, Focal Point about Karl Marx, International Political Economy (undergraduate and graduate levels), Seminar for Seniors, the European Financial Crisis, and International Development.

    My research line at DePaul was economic and political issues related to the European Financial Crisis, as well as international political economics. In the period 1991 – 1995 I worked  as research fellow and leader of multidisciplinary research teams in at the University of Havana, the Autonomous University of Yucatan, and the Merida Technological Institute, my line of research was sustainable development in agriculture.  In the period 1976 – 1990 my line of research was economic development of the Cuban sugar agric-industry at the University of Havana. From 1982 until 1992 I was the leader of faculty and students in multidisciplinary research teams about the Cuban sugar agric-industry.

    I have published five books related to the application of mathematics to economics in Cuba, one book about methodology of research in economics in Merida, Mexico, my autobiography {Havana-Mérida-Chicago – A Journey to Freedom}, and the memoir Gladys, My Unforgettable Love. My publishing history also comprises more than 150 papers in Cuban, Mexican, Ukrainian and American journals specialized in applied mathematics to economics and management and international political economy.  I have participated in more than 100 scientific seminars in Cuba, Mexico, the United States, Dubai and Australia with about 120 different papers
